AHAM
Hispanic-American Women's Association
Who we are...
The Hispanic-American Women’s Association, known as AHAM, is a
non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, formed by women of Hispanic
descent who are interested in preserving their culture and
increasing educational opportunities to Hispanic students in the
Upstate of South Carolina.  AHAM is made up of diverse, dynamic,
working Hispanic women who enjoy sharing their culture and
language.

AHAM also welcomes members of other cultures who are interested
in learning more about our culture and traditions.  Non-Hispanic
AHAM members also share our goal of helping the Hispanic youth in
Upstate SC to reach their dream of pursuing higher education.
History
AHAM was formed in 1998 when a group of Hispanic, working
women noticed the need to form an organization that would promote
cultural awareness throughout the community. At the same time they
were interested in preserving traditions, language and ties to their
motherland.  These brave women paved the way to what now is
known as the Asociación Hispano-Americana de Mujeres.

AHAM's past presidents include a group of visionary women whose
talents and willingness to put them to the service of the community
have furthered AHAM's mission.  These women are:
Monthly Meetings
Our monthly scheduled meeting is held at 12 noon on the second Saturday of every
month at the Greenville Marriott Hotel (Giattu restaurant) located at One Parkway
East, Greenville, SC, 29615.  Each month we have speakers presenting different
topics of interest for personal or professional development to our members during
the meetings.

Members who would like to have lunch should plan to be at the hotel by 11 a.m. to
enjoy our social hour and to share pleasant moments.
Education
For years AHAM has focused on improving educational opportunities and youth
empowerment for Hispanic students.  Our Scholarship Award program has provided
many brilliant Hispanic-college-bound students the opportunity to pursue their
higher education.
Membership
Our membership consists of women of Hispanic descent and other cultural backgrounds who love the Hispanic culture, reside in the
Upstate SC, and enjoy cultural, educational, volunteer and social activities.  Our adjunct members are not from Hispanic descent but
speak Spanish or want to learn or practice Spanish and enjoy our culture too!

Annual Reports
What We Do
AHAM members volunteer with our own planned activities as
well as participate and support other non-profit organizations
in the community.  A few of our fundraising events include the
Artisphere Festival and BMW Charity Pro-Am in May, and the
annual International Gala for Higher Education in October.

Educational events in which AHAM members participate
include Ready 4 Reading, formerly known as Lapsits for Early
Literacy and the Graduate Greenville programs. Ready 4
Reading is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission “guides
underserved parents and caregivers of primarily newborns
through 48 month olds to create a love of books, develop
readiness for reading, and provide children's books in
homes.”  Graduate Greenville is “a community-wide effort to
improve high school success and increase the graduation rate.”

AHAM received its first Upstate Diversity Leadership award in the
International Category from the Riley Institute at Furman University.
This award recognizes “organizations and individuals for their
accomplishments in improving diversity in the Upstate.”

In 2009 a national poll recognized AHAM as one of the Top 10 Latina’s
Organizations.

Many have been the achievements and recognitions that our very
own AHAM members received in 2008-2010. These were given for the
amazing labor of love put into volunteering their time, efforts, and
talents year after year. Organizations such as YWCA (Dream
Achievers), Women Making History, the Greenville County Human
Relations Commission and Talk Magazine’s The 25 Must Beautiful
Women have recognized several AHAM members.
