Cultural and Educational
Many are the cultural and educational events in which AHAM participates throughout the year. Educational events in which AHAM
participates include Lapsits for Early Literacy and the Graduate Greenville programs. Lapsits’ Cat in the Hat event takes place in early
spring and Graduate Greenville in late summer. Lapsits for Early Literacy is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission “guides underserved
parents and caregivers of primarily newborns through 48 month olds to create a love of books, develop readiness for reading, and
provide children's books in homes.” Graduate Greenville is “a community-wide effort to improve high school success and increase the
graduation rate.”
In 2008, AHAM held an Essay and Poetry Contest for High School students. There were three categories: I Honor English, II Regular
English, and III ESL English. Every category had a first 1st of $60.00 and a 2nd prize of $40.00.
In 2005 AHAM began celebrating the Hispanic Heritage Month at Furman and the Hughes Library by showcasing folkloric attire, artistic
displays, visual presentations of music and dances, and delicious dishes from different countries. From mid-September through mid-
October, AHAM continues partaking in this celebration with organizations such as the USC-Upstate, the Greenville Library System, and
Furman University. Cultural events in which AHAM participates include the celebration at the Hughes Library in downtown Greenville and
the Taste of Desserts at Furman University. During the Hispanic Heritage celebration there is a parade of food, music, dances and
traditional folklore dresses. At Furman, AHAM members bring regional desserts, and savory dishes to share. Members also perform with
dances and artistic presentations from various Latin American countries.
Fundraising
In December 2009, Michelin announced its contribution from the golf tournament to AHAM's scholarship program. This is the third year that
Michelin sponsors AHAM. Likewise, in 2010, AHAM members and friends of AHAM will volunteer during the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented
by SYNNEX Corporation golf tournament. This will be the first year that AHAM participates in this fundraising event. AHAM will participate
again in the Artisphere Festival and Fall for Greenville in downtown Greenville in May and October, respectively. This is another way in
which AHAM participates to raise funds needed to continue our scholarship award program.
Social
AHAM is made up of diverse, dynamic, professional Hispanic women that
enjoy sharing their culture and language with other members.
Throughout the year, we celebrate Valentine’s Day, Mother’s and
Father's Day, Halloween, and Christmas among other celebrations. AHAM’
s members and their loved ones always take time out to enjoy life, family
and friends. It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, there is always a
social gathering where AHAM families and friends get together and enjoy
each other!
Mother's Day
On September 26, 2009, AHAM in partnership with the Greenville County Library System held the 8th Annual
Hispanic Heritage Festival at the Hughes Library in downtown Greenville, SC. This festival was full of color with
a parade of nations and regional dresses, folklore dances, tango, and salsa, and food! The event was open to
the public and the entire family for free!
On September 12, 2009, AHAM held its first Taking Steps to Higher Education 5K Walk at Furman University. More than 100 people
registered for this event and close to 70 actually walked! This event helped to raise funds for AHAM’s 2010 Scholarship program.
Thanks to Furman University and the Greenville County Recreation District and our sponsors that made this event possible!
